Decisions we help you make

  • Is an SMSF right for me, or would a retail or industry fund suit me better?
  • Are the costs and trustee responsibilities justified for my balance and goals?
  • What should my fund’s investment strategy include?
  • Can my SMSF hold property, and should it?
  • How should my SMSF move into pension phase?

How we help

What the advice covers

An SMSF gives you more control over how your super is invested, along with legal responsibilities and fixed running costs. We help you decide whether that trade-off makes sense, and advise on the strategy of a fund you already run.

  • Suitability. Whether an SMSF suits your balance, goals, time and interest in managing the fund.
  • Costs and alternatives. How SMSF costs compare with retail and industry fund options.
  • Investment strategy. Diversification, liquidity, risk and the needs of each member.
  • Specific assets. The rules and risks of holding direct property or other assets in the fund.
  • Contributions and pensions. Planning contributions and the move into retirement phase.
  • Insurance and nominations. Cover for members and death benefit arrangements.

How it fits your wider plan

An SMSF is one part of your retirement plan, not a goal in itself. We consider how it fits with your investments outside super, your estate plans and any business assets. We do not establish funds, prepare accounts or handle compliance. Your SMSF accountant, administrator, auditor and lawyer look after those areas, and we work with them where needed.

Who it suits

  • Business owners considering holding business premises in super
  • Professionals and executives with established balances who want more control
  • Retirees and pre-retirees reviewing an existing fund’s strategy

Common questions about self-managed super fund (smsf)

Do you handle SMSF administration and audits?

No. Administration, accounting and the annual audit are handled by your SMSF accountant, administrator and auditor. We provide the financial advice and work with them where needed.

Is there a minimum balance for an SMSF?

There is no legal minimum, but costs are largely fixed, so a smaller balance can make an SMSF expensive. We compare the costs with your alternatives before recommending one.

What responsibilities do SMSF trustees have?

Trustees are legally responsible for running the fund and complying with super law. That includes keeping an investment strategy, record-keeping and arranging an annual audit.

Can you review an SMSF I already have?

Yes. We review the investment strategy, diversification, liquidity and how the fund fits your wider plan, including whether it still suits your needs.
